Martha Grimes compares one aspect of her creative method to Michelangelo’s.
The prolific mystery novelist relates to the Italian Renaissance sculptor’s statement, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”
Paraphrasing Michelangelo, Grimes explained the connection.
“The sculptor chips away at a block of marble until he finds the figure within. [In much the same way], I have the feeling that my books have already been written, and I am going through a process of active discovery.”
“Consequently,” she said, “even if I can’t imagine how I’ll tie it all together, I just keep on writing.”
